In the distant future, sapient animals, the communals gather at night to listen to stories about humans, legendary figures who once ruled the world alone. By then, only legends remain, myths written in the Good Book, an ancient manuscript chronicling the hardships of a hostile world and the epic efforts to battle for survival in which machines played a crucial role. For communal dogma, humans endowed some animal species with intelligence comparable to theirs and then directed their intelligent machines to guard their cherished creation after they died. The veracity of these tales remains a secret debate. Why did humans disappear? To what degree did machinery contribute to human demise? Most crucial of all, do the communals inherit the world, only to meet the same fate?
“Marcel squinted and roofed his eyes with one paw to watch the sunset, feeling nostalgia for the time when he was young, ignorant of the poignant truths of this world. Altruism: that is one word the herd must learn soon, the best of our qualities.”
